Chapter 1

Fiona Evans is Human Resources Director at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in the UK, which she joined in 2014, and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Her introduction of the HR business partner role at ZSL helped her to win HR Director of the Year in 2017 at the HR Excellence Awards, with her team also receiving Best HR team and the HR Excellence Gold Award. In this interview, she discusses the strategic role of HR and also offers some useful advice.


Chapter 2

David Forkin is Talent and Learning Manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Hewlett-Packard. He has over 20 years’ experience in HP Human Resources in a wide range of disciplines, including talent acquisition, compensation, business partnering and talent management. In his current role, he works directly with the EMEA leadership in the area of talent management, including succession planning, leadership development and professional skills training. In this interview, David brings his considerable experience to our discussion on HR planning and talent management.


Chapter 4

Sabahat Ahmed is HR Consultant at PeopleFirst HR Consultancy in Dubai, UAE, a company which achieved Highly Commended at the CIPD People Management Awards in 2017 for the best HR/L&D consultancy. In this interview, she discusses engagement and retention initiatives.


Chapter 5

Oonagh Buckley is Director General of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) in Ireland. The WRC handles all aspects of individual and collective disputes in the workplace and workplace inspections, as well as dealing with claims of discrimination both in employment and the delivery of services. She is a qualified barrister and Adjunct Professor in the University College Cork School of Law. In this interview, Oonagh discusses managing the employment relationship and conflict resolution.


Chapter 6

At the time of filming, Lisa Dempsey was the Managing Director of Leadership Labs International and Vice President of Learning and Development at the Professional Women’s Network in Amsterdam, which works to accelerate gender-balanced leadership. She has since left her role at PWN to take up the position of Executive Vice President of Learning and Development for the She Dares Foundation. Originally from the USA, Lisa has worked for a variety of multinational corporations in the Netherlands, taking her as far afield as Australia, Chile and Singapore. She is also a recipient of the Deloitte BOLD Leader award for her work in visionary leadership. In this interview, Lisa discusses diversity and inclusion.


Chapter 7

John Counihan is Head of Organizational Design and Development at Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland. Having joined the company in 1990, he has spent the last 20 years involved in people management, first as a line manager, then managing other managers and finally, in his current role, influencing the organizational culture. In this interview, John discusses performance management and appraisals.


Chapter 8

Miriam Cushen holds the role of Glanbia Global Head of Reward, where she has global responsibility for strategy, policy and implementation relating to Glanbia’s reward offering. Her extensive HR and business experience is with successful global food and drink businesses such as Diageo, Kerry Group, and Glanbia where she has been responsible for the design, implementation and embedding of global strategic HR programmes in dynamic and changing environments. In this interview, Miriam discusses the best ways to pay salespeople and how to inspire them to work harder.


Chapter 9

Aidan Lawrence is Global Talent and Learning Operations Director for Hewlett-Packard. Managing a worldwide team of L&D professionals, he has direct responsibility for the WW T&L operations function, including global systems and platforms, strategic learning delivery, vendor and partner management, financial and strategy management and acquisition integration. In this interview, Aidan discusses learning and development.


Chapter 11

In these interviews Neville Bourke and Rob Shanley talk about how they use human resource analytics.

Neville Bourke is Founder of Bourke Human Resources and an organization change and leadership specialist. Formerly HR Director of Retail Banking at the Bank of Ireland, he was responsible for leading the people, culture and capability elements during a period of change as the 230-year old organization was transitioning through the digital transformation of financial services.

Rob Shanley is a People Consultant (HRBP) for Google in Dublin, Ireland, where he primarily supports teams in the Cloud organization. In his previous role as Programme Manager for the engineering team, Rob worked on a number of projects, including formalizing the hiring process and building the business intelligence for an internal engineering organization; managing the largest rotation programme at Google; and managing an effort to analyse project spend for an engineering organization. During this time, he worked in San Francisco, USA for 18 months.


Chapter 12

Dr Gonzalo Shoobridge is Head of Action Consultancy at Great Place To Work® UK and is also responsible for managing the strategic direction of Great Place To Work® Nigeria. Great Place To Work® is a global organization which undertakes research, consulting and training on the make-up of a great workplace and how this can be achieved. In this interview, Gonzalo discusses wellbeing at work.


Chapter 13

Claire Campion has worked as an HR business partner in a broad range of industries, including hospitality, TV and broadcasting, and most recently in the tech industry. Claire is currently working as a HRBP at Google, based at the Head office in Mountain View California. Her areas of HR experience include coaching, change management, international HR, and employee engagement. In this interview, she tells us about HRM on an international scale.


Chapter 14

Integra is a digital content services company headquartered in Pondicherry, India, which works with Publishers and Corporates (Learning & Development teams) offering content and eLearning solutions, globally. The company takes great pride in being a socially responsible organization and in its treatment of employees, including initiatives for women’s empowerment and health and wellness. In this interview, the founders of Integra, Sriram Subramanya and Anu Sriram, talk about corporate social responsibility and their advice on working in this field.
