About the authors

Mike Riley is the Director of the School of Built Environment, Liverpool John Moores University, UK and is Visiting Professor to the Building Surveying Department at University of Malaya. He has more than 20 years’ experience in Building Surveying practice and Construction and Property education. Mike is a consultant to several national organizations in the UK and has an established reputation with RICS internationally.

Mike is the joint author of several text books in the field of Construction Technology and he has published numerous academic papers in the areas of building pathology, property management and building performance appraisal.

Mike obtained his first degree in from Salford University (Building Surveying), followed by his Master of Science from Heriot-Watt University (Building Services Engineering). He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers. He is also a Chairman of Assessors for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and has assessed candidates in Hong-Kong and Malaysia as well as the UK.

Alison Cotgrave is a Subject Leader in the School of Built Environment, Liverpool John Moores University, with responsibility for Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management and Architectural Technology, and has worked in academia for 19 years. She was previously employed in the construction industry as a site manager. After graduating with BSc(Hons) Building in 1988. Alison subsequently completed a Masters of Education at the University of Manchester in 1997, followed by a PhD at LJMU in 2008. She is also Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Technology and Environment.

Alison is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, Chartered Surveyor, Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers, Chartered Environmentalist and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is the co-author of a number of books on Construction Technology and has published extensively in the area of Sustainability in Construction Education. She is currently on the supervision teams for 5 PhD students whose topics range from the psychological aspects of changing attitudes to sustainability via the curriculum to the design of a decision making aid for the selection of renewable/sustainable energy systems for buildings.

Alison is External Examiner at a number of UK HEIs and is Vice Chair of the Chartered Institute of Building accreditation panel which reviews and accredits Construction Management programmes in the UK and internationally.
